Very good, Pinky! You get partial credit for your answer. The "E" does indeed stand for "enlisted." An E-5 in the U.S. Army is a Sergeant. A Staff Sergeant would be an E-6. An American General would have the grade of O-10 (the highest possible rank during peacetime). Did you know that there are actually four different types of general? From lowest to highest they are: Brigadier General, Major General, Lieutenant General, and General. When I was in Army Basic Training many years ago, they taught us a little phrase to help us remember the order of general ranks. It goes like this - Be My Little General. The first letter of each word is a clue to each general rank. After 28 years in the Army, I still use that mnemonic occasionally.
