Betrayed love
Lonely for years, finally she meets her dream man in the net. But he turns out to be a cheater. Brigitta Bergen has to pay dearly for her romance. A broken heart remains. "Romance Scamming" is the name of the game about making money on the internet through fraud.
Brigitta Bergen met a man on the internet a few months ago and fell in love with him. "At first I thought, why is he interested in me? He's a Champions League."
But in many messages he assures his love. He evades a meeting again and again. After a few months, he asks for money.
And she remarks: In the beginning it is $ 2,000, then the amounts are higher. Overall, she transfers more than $ 20,000 (17,600 euros), her entire fortune. "Today I wonder, how could I be so stupid."
Law enforcement barely possible
Getting hold of romance scammers is extremely difficult. Because they are anxious to make their mark in the sand: The IP address can hardly be determined outside the EU. The Internet profile is fake, the mobile phones are often equipped with unregistered prepaid.
To collect the victims' money - usually at a money transfer service like Western Union - they use fake ID cards or send straw men.
Another problem: To prosecute the perpetrators, the German authorities need legal assistance from the respective country. But usually there is not interested in a cooperation there.

Romance Scamming
© dpa "Romance Scamming" is an Internet fraud scam with the sole purpose that women - or even men - send money to fraudsters, transfer money or do them a "criminal favor".
Most of the time, a love relationship is initiated, which, however, does not actually exist. They are usually controlled from Ghana and Nigeria. This Ghana-Nigeria Connection works as a veritable love mafia specializing in love cheating.
In addition to Ghana and Nigeria, there are also some romance scammers who write from South-East Asia.
Danger on online dating sites
Scammers are looking for potential victims on online dating sites such as Friendscout, Lovoo, eDarling or on social networks like Facebook. The goal is older Europeans and Americans. A short online invitation to chat serves as a first contact for many.
To make themselves interesting, the scammers create unusual life stories, usually portrayed as sensitive and injured, have children, are divorced or widowed. In addition, there is a supposedly serious background, whether they work in the military, are an engineer, an architect or a scientist.
Female scammers pretend to be nurses, doctors, actresses, and often businesswomen. The pictures and profile photos are extremely attractive and as authentic as possible, but mostly stolen from foreign profiles.
