The following news story came to my attention today:

If you are reading this and you have even the slightest doubt that you may be dealing with a romance scammer who is pretending to be someone they are not - please read this article. Also know that this has happened before and will unfortunately happen again. The good people here at romancescam.com are doing their best to try and help stop this from happening and to help support and educate those that this has happened to.
These scams are real.
I'm not a regular here at romancescam.com , and I know this has been reiterated all over this site, but be cautious when dealing with people you meet online. That doesn't mean you should automatically fear anyone you meet on a dating site, but use common sense. If someone you have met starts asking you for money, stop and think about it before you send it to them. While there are scammers and thieves out there, there are still normal, decent, and nice people out there too, so don't be afraid of everyone either. If you have doubts, work with the people here and spend some time looking into just who you're dealing with. We're all here to help however we can.
Hope this article helps to reinforce that this is a real thing.
Be safe in 2013!
